Prayer: A Call to Action

In Yancey's book on prayer, in one chapter he talks about how prayer ought to spur us on to action.  I love the visual he gives when he writes, "Sometimes, like the boy who asks his parents to solve a math problem while he plays video games, we ask God for things we should be doing ourselves."

Prayer is a call to action.  It is a call for me to get involved in kingdom business.  "Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."  How is that going to happen?  We have witness of it happening when Jesus walked this earth in the flesh.  His will is that it continue to happen through His body -- Christians.  To a significant degree, WE are the answer to that prayer.

I have struggled over the years with whether to pray and wait for God to answer my prayer or to do what I think God wants me to do whether I pray about it or not. I'm probably still confused about it at times today but I believe that as I draw nearer to God, my prayer is that I will follow His path, that He will lead me where I need to go (or away from where I don't need to go) and then I can get busy doing His will.

Great point today.

I have struggled with this concept as well. But in most cases, I believe if we are able to do something, we should do it. Often God takes our meager, little action and makes something much greater out of it. That's what he has done throughout history (and my life, as well).

In most situations God doesn't call us to pray and then twiddle our thumbs.

We often approach prayer as if we are going to change God. Instead, maybe prayer is to change us.
(I think Yancey hits on this in his book)
